Ahu Sahin (NL/TR), is an Amsterdam based contemporary visual artist. Sahin studied law (LLM) at the University of Amsterdam and completed a Bachelor of Fine Arts at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam.

Sahin reflects on modern day society. She believes in the strength of silence and aims to make committed art without giving up poetic sophistication. Sahin is interested in the role of individuals within changing social environments, alienation, autonomy and conformism. Her art is rooted in film but covers a wide range of mediums. Her installations are a combination of film and sculptural objects which have an intense colour (luminous, fluorescent) and a trace of movement.

“The language of my art is silence. I believe art can transmit a message and evoke emotions without a written explanation or even a title. Art is an overall physical experience, not just a visual one, and you can only physically experience art based on your own truth, your own discourse. Words don’t give meaning to an artwork. You do.”

“My aim is to transfer emotion, because understanding the work is not enough to truly grasp it.”

“It is hard to be feminine. For a woman and a man. However, I still choose to embrace it.”
